IIT Jodhpur was the centre of attraction recently when it inaugurated Shaurya Sthal on its premises. There is more to it than meets the eye.
Shaurya Sthal features a legendary T-55 tank. Another thing that added to the celebration was inauguration of majestic wall sculpture titled ‘Dharma, Bhartiya Gyan Parampara, evam Sansthagat Kartavya’ at the Administrative Building.
Chief guest at IIT Jodhpur
Chief guest for the event was A.S. Kiran Kumar, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Jodhpur. The event was held in the august presence of Prof. Avinash Kumar Agarwal, Director, IIT Jodhpur, and Prof. Bhabani Kumar Satapathy, Deputy Director, IIT Jodhpur.
Visual discourse
The newly unveiled relief mural at the Administrative Building is a profound representation of the Dharma Yuddha (the righteous war) from the Mahabharata.
It serves as a visual metaphor for the Institute’s mission to blend ancient wisdom with modern scientific excellence, say sources from IIT Jodhpur.
Key elements
The main symbolic elements of the mural are mentioned below:
# The Guru-Shishya Parampara: At the center lies the eternal conversation between Krishna and Arjuna. Representing the ultimate "Master and Disciple" bond, it symbolizes the transmission of divine knowledge, long-term sustainability, and duty-bound leadership (Nishkama Karma).
# The Chariot as the Human Self: In a deep philosophical layer, the chariot represents the human body; Arjuna represents the individual soul, while Krishna, the charioteer, represents the Higher Intellect. The four horses—Saibya, Sugriva, Meghapuspa, and Balahaka—symbolize righteousness, loyalty, speed, and power.
# Cosmic Balance: The upper panel features the Sun (Surya), representing Dharma, and the Moon, representing the Pandava empire. Clouds symbolize the unforeseen obstacles of life, which Krishna helps navigate.
# Integration of Modern Science: The mural uniquely features seven emblems representing the core knowledge domains of IIT Jodhpur, including AI and Data Science, Bioscience, Chemical, Mechanical, Automotive and Aerospace Engineering, and Performing Arts.
These icons signify that Vigyan (science) is the practical application of knowledge to reality.
# The Battlefield: The lower portion depicts the clash between the Kauravas (symbolizing demonic) and Pandavas (symbolizing divine) reminding viewers that while life involves struggle and pain, the motivation of teaching and learning is eternal.
Shaurya Sthal
It is interesting to note that the main gate of IIT Jodhpur hosts Shaurya Sthal which features the veteran T-55 Main Battle Tank.
This tank has become well-known for its service in Indian Armoured Corps. It is said to have played a decisive role in 1971 Indo-Pak war.
T-55 is said to be a testament to mechanical resilience and strategic brilliance. IIT Jodhpur salutes the valour of Indian armed forces by installing this tank.
The institution also desires to inspire students to give a big boost to indigenous defense innovation.
All for developed India
Chief guest A S Kiran Kumar said today, they anchor the identity of IIT Jodhpur in two essential pillars - the 'Shaurya' to protect the nation and the 'Gyan' (knowledge) to lead it.
These installations remind us that modern scientific quests are most powerful when integrated with the ethical framework of the Bhartiya Gyan Parampara, said Kiran Kumar.
Philosophy
Prof. Avinash Kumar Agarwal said the mural is not just an art; it is a philosophy of IIT Jodhpur for our students.
It shows that whether in Artificial Intelligence or Mechanical Engineering, our work must be guided by the spirit of duty, Bhartiya Gyan Parampara, and a deeper understanding of the universe, he said.
"At IIT Jodhpur, we are not merely building engineers; we are cultivating 'Yodhas' of innovation and 'Sadhaks' of knowledge."
The T-55 tank at our gate is a reminder that strength without strategy is hollow, while the mural of the Gita at our core reminds us that knowledge without 'Dharma' is directionless, said Avinash Kumar Agarwal.
By bringing the Shaurya Sthal and Bhartiya Gyan Parampara together, we are challenging our students to use the precision of science to solve the complexities of the soul and the nation alike, he said.
'Our duty—our Sansthagat Kartavya—is to ensure that as we leap into the future of AI and Space Tech, we do so with the unshakable moral compass of our ancestors.'
Strength
As the T-55 Tank stands guard with the strength of the past, and the Dharma mural lights the path for our intellectual future, IIT Jodhpur reaffirms its commitment to shaping leaders who are as resilient in character as they are brilliant in innovation.
